The DNI is the official valid document used as an identity card in Honduras. It is required for various administrative or bureaucratic procedures.
The National Identity Document is mandatory for all Honduran citizens, both in the country and abroad. The identity card contains personal data and the identity number assigned at birth.
Obtaining a Honduran Identity Card in the United States
If you are in the United States and need to renew your Honduran National Identity Document due to its expiration or because it has been lost, you must schedule a consular appointment to present yourself at the nearest Consulate and complete the process.
Once you’ve scheduled the appointment, you should arrive at the consulate on the agreed day 10 minutes before your scheduled time.
At the consulate, you must follow these steps:
- Inform the authorities about the process you wish to complete.
- Present the required documents.
- If you have your DNI, present it; if not, you must show your birth certificate.
- Your biometrics will be taken (fingerprint, signature, and ID photo).
- Pay the processing fee and show the receipt.
- Once all the information is confirmed as correct, the request for your Honduran identity card will be processed.
Please note that receiving your Honduran Identity Document may take one to two months since it is processed in Honduras and then sent to the Consulate where you requested it for collection. To collect it, you must bring the receipt or a slip, which you will receive on the day of the process, as proof of the request.

What Documents Must I Present to Apply for the Honduran Identity Card?
To apply for the Honduran National Identity Document at the Consulate, you must present the following requirements:
- If available, present your previous identity document.
- Schedule a consular appointment.
- Present your original Honduran passport.
- Present your birth certificate.
- If necessary, bring two witnesses to confirm your identity, or provide a sworn statement from your guardians or a second to fourth-degree relative. The latter must provide the relevant documentation to confirm family ties.
- If the person applying for the DNI is a minor, they must be accompanied by their parents, who must be registered in the RNP system.
- If the DNI was stolen, you must file a report and bring the police report to the consulate.
- You must pay the TGR-1 receipt for 200L for the process in your name, addressed to the National Registry of Persons.
Validity and Processing Fee for the Honduran Document
The National Identity Document of Honduras is valid for 10 years, and the processing fee is $8. However, if this is your first time obtaining it, the procedure is free of charge.
